StopOctoberSurprises started out with a Bang. Within a few days of popping up he had, through a magical use of the tools of the web, outed Lane Hudson of the Human Rights Campaign as the author of StopSexPredators and he promised to give us the "Rest of the Story". He promised to give us the who and why of the story. We had postings with talk of ominous deadlines, secret code words were bantered about, several days of darkness and then - the fizzle. As of last night, he posted that he will not give any further information because he could not verify it. He stated that he hopes that those who know the information will provide it to the MSM to get the truth out but that he hopes that it is done after the November 7 elections. He states,
"The source with the complete story is on the “other side” (meaning a Democrat) and has made it clear to me that he too wants the story to come out but will not reveal it until after the Nov 7th elections. I have no problem with that ..."
I do not quite get the reasoning behind this action. If it were left up to the MSM, not to mention the Democrats, we never would have known this much of the story. The story of StopSexPredators had run the MSM circuit and was dead. It was destined to be regulated to a footnote in the Mark Foley scandal. Only because of the effort and tenacity of the blogger on StopOctoberSurprises did the story get this far.
First, relying upon the MSM to tell the whole story is the same as a child believing in fairy tales; it may help them go to sleep at night with visions of princes and princesses in their heads but, in the morning it is still just a fantasy. Second, if StopOctoberSurprises cannot verify the information then put it out there, with the appropriate qualifications, to allow the blogosphere to get to work. Sure some blogs will seize upon it for purely partisan reasons and use it for hatchet jobs, but that is the nature of the beast. You gotta break some eggs if you are going to make an omelet. The MSM has already shown that it is not going to write about this particular story until it has reached the otherwise not required "proven beyond a reasonable doubt" standard. The only harm in letting the remaining information out is that the relatively few people who follow partisan blogs (as opposed to those who read or watch the MSM)will chat about it in their cubicles at work. The upside is that the truth will be ferreted out. Third, StopSexPredators was a partisan hack job. If the voters have been spoon fed the details of the Mark Foley scandal as seen by the MSM, then they should be allowed to know the truth about those who provided the information.
They We should be allowed to know "the Rest of the Story".
The voters in this country have to be trusted to see through the fog of information and make the right choices in the end. The beauty of the Internet is that the fog, which is often created by the MSM, can be sliced through by the blogosphere. I say let the information out, let the beast work and let the voters make an informed decision. The decision by StopOctoberSurprises to withhold of the information is a lack of trust of the blogoshere and a lack of trust of the voter. The work performed by StopOctoberSurprises has been admirable and he should receive accolades, however the sudden loss of faith is disappointing. What a fizzle.
