Dhimmi is an Arabic term applied by Arab-Muslims to non-Muslims who have capitulated to Muslim domination. The dhimmi, through a contract of surrender, agrees to live under Muslim rule, but subject to certain restrictions established by the Muslim conqueror. These restrictions result in a dhimmi being accorded the status of a second class citizen.
The restrictions placed upon a dhimmi include the requirement to pay a yearly tribute (jiyza), to wear distinctive clothing or markers (zonnar), and to accept restrictions upon the non-Muslim religious practices . The dhimmi is without legal protections when dealing with a Muslim and a dhimmi’s testimony is not allowed in court proceedings which involve a Muslim. The purposes of the restrictions are humiliation of the dhimmi and the need to make the dhimmi’s status evident to any Muslim with whom the dhimmi comes into contact.
The origins of the dhimmi are found in the words of the Koran and have been enforced with varying intensity throughout history. However, this ancient custom is not regulated to the annals of history. It has been experienced by United States forces when stationed in Arabic countries and is the subject of a recent law passed in Iran.
On May 20, 2006 the New York Post printed an article written by Mr. Amir Taheri. The article discussed a law which was recently passed by the Islamic Majlis of Iran and is being reviewed by the Council of Guardians. The pretext of the law is the establishment of a dress code for all Muslims to remove the influence of the infidel" from Iranian dress. Attached to the implementation of the law is the proposal that all non-Muslims (dhimmi) be marked by the wearing of a zonnar. The use of the zonnar would allow Muslims to avoid contact with non-Islamic dhimmi. The proposed zonners are yellow for Jewish dhimmi, red for Christian dhimmi and Persian blue for dhimmi who practice the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism.
This blog is my zonnar; only it is not worn by one who has or will capitulate to a Muslim Conqueror. The red cross of this blog is worn as a symbol of my faith and as a warning to anyone who attempts to force his way of life upon me. It stands as a banner proclaiming pride in my country, my family and my way of life. It stands to honor those who fight on foreign shores to protect these ideas which I hold so dearly and which so many before them fought so gallantly to obtain. From its strength comes the desire for peace, but a peace built upon tolerance and understanding for one’s fellow man not one of degradation derived from hate, humiliation and threats of violence. Capitulation is not an option.
