Louisiana Republican Party Endorses Royal Alexander

  (Baton Rouge)- The Republican Party of Louisiana is proud to announce the endorsement of Royal Alexander for Attorney General. Royal has the experience and character needed to serve as Louisiana’s chief legal officer. He will restore the people’s faith in the office which has been abused for personal and political purposes.

Most recently, Royal served as the chief of staff to U.S. Congressman Rodney Alexander. Prior to his service in our nation’s capitol, he sat as administrative law for the Division of Administrative Law. He also gained invaluable legal experience during his tenure as the law clerk for U.S. District Judge Rebecca F. Doherty. Additionally, Royal maintained a private legal practice where he handled numerous civil and criminal cases. He is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and a graduate of Oklahoma City School of Law. Royal obtained his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University at Shreveport.

* By the way it is my understanding that Royal Alexander received more votes for his endorsement than Bobby Jindal received for his endorsement as governor.

Haditha Marines Cleared

Great explanation concerning what happened in Haditha by Uncle Jimbo at BlackFive.  The point he makes is right on - the death of the children and true civilians is a tragedy but not a crime.  Had the Marines not been attacked by an enemy that hides among women and children then there would have been no engagement in an area with "true civilians".  I am glad to know that these heroes will not be prosecuted.

Scott Thomas Beauchamp - In Falsus Unum, In Falsus Omnibus

Scott Thomas Beauchamp has recanted, under oath, his stories to the New Republic.  Fox News has the story here.  Beauchamp supposedly admitted, "that all three articles he published in the New Republic were exaggerations and falsehoods -- fabrications containing only "a smidgen of truth." Fox News points out, did Beauchamp lie to the New Republic to push his own personal agenda or is he lying to the military investigators to cover his own arse.  That is the problem with liars, you never know when they are telling the truth.  Hence the legal maxim, "In falsus unum, In falsus omnibus" (If one lies about one thing, he will lie about everything).

The attorney general for Louisiana is the chief legal officer in the state, and his duties are numerous. According to the Louisiana Constitution, the attorney general is to protect the interest of the state by representing it in civil matters and by advising and assisting a district attorney, upon request, in a criminal case.

Also, as a check and balance to corrupt or incompetent district attorneys he may obtain permission from a district court to institute, prosecute or intervene in a criminal prosecution. These duties, as further defined by the Legislature, are extensive and are essential to the welfare of the state and its citizens.

How is it then, that with such vast responsibilities and extensive duties, current Attorney General Charles Foti continues to find the time and the resources to take actions outside the scope of the duties of his office and yet fails to perform those tasked to him? Whether it is incompetence or arrogance, I do not know. But it is obvious that he has a problem focusing on the duties trusted to him by the voters of this state.

Under the previous Constitution the attorney general had the unrestrained power to prosecute any criminal matter that he desired. The Constitution was revised in 1974 and, due to perceived abuses, this power was specifically taken away from the attorney general. Under the current constitutional scheme, the district attorney offices are tasked with the responsibility for criminal prosecutions in their district. It is not the job of the attorney general to seek out individuals for prosecution.

Foti has crossed the constitutionally prescribed boundaries on several occasions, the most obvious of which was the Dr. Anna Pou case. Rather than focusing his resources on doing the jobs assigned to him, Foti has helped political cronies and used the prestige of his office to hold press conferences.

If the hurricanes of 2005 have taught Louisiana anything, it is that we can not continue to allow those who run our state to do so with a laissez-faire attitude. If we refuse to hold our politicians responsible, we may all be washed away, whether or not the levees hold.
